Lecture 1 – Mystical California
Fireside Room

Early California Artists, such as Christian Nahl, painted the Gold Rush. Grand landscapes and the idea of “Westward Ho!” were represented by artists Albert Bierstadt, William Kieth, Jon Muir, and Thomas Hill. Grace Hudson painted the Indians. Leland Stanford and the railroad tycoons connected California to the rest of the country and stories by Mark Twain and Bret Harte were stirring up interest in the Wild West.
